How do our subscribers use PressDisplay?

December 28, 2006

Ever wonder how different people use PressDisplay? We know that many of our customers just love reading news from around the world and others are frequent travellers or expatriates and want to read newspapers from “home”. But did you know that some people find PressDisplay to be a competitive advantage in their work?

Well…here’s one story of a gentlemen who gets up every morning at 6 AM and spends an hour (sometimes two) using PressDisplay for strategic marketing.  An independent consultant, this subscriber does marketing for a sustainable streetlight company in Victoria, BC called Streetlight Intelligence (according to their website, they have patented technology that can reduce energy consumption in streetlights up to 40%).

His job is to find new market opportunities for them around the world and he uses PressDisplay to help him do that. He has set up monitors for different keywords (one of which is obvious – streetlights).  In the past week alone, he has been able to share 2 significant market opportunities with the Streetllight Intelligence sales executives – one in Minneapolis and one in India. (Just check out the papers below…)

He wrote to tell me that PressDisplay has become indispensible to him in his work and that he has been sharing articles with clients and colleagues around the world on a daily basis. He is about to start his own blog on sustainability and will be posting articles from PressDisplay on it as well.

It’s always great to hear stories like this from customers. What about you? How do you use PressDisplay? I’d love to hear from you.

Happy New Year everyone!

All I want for Xmas…

December 20, 2006

So what do you all want for Xmas?  I asked a number of our customers and employees this question and the answers I received were pretty much what I expected…

  1. Win the lottery
  2. Early retirement (comes with 1 above I guess)
  3. 2 day work week and 5 day weekends (I think 1, 2, and 3 came from the same person)
  4. Jennifer Anisten and/or Angelina Jolie
  5. Brad Pitt
  6. Lifetime subscription to PressDisplay (I had to put this one in :) )
  7. A generator

What?  A generator?  What kind of Xmas present is that?

Well, according to the Director of Operations at NewspaperDirect, James Woloszyn, it was number 1 on his Xmas wish-list this year for the Network Operations Center.  And…it would appear that his wish has been granted, just in time too.

A Happy Ops Director

I guess James must have been a good boy this year.  Not likely – I wonder which elf he bribed…:)

Merry Christmas James.  And to all our friends around the world, have a very happy holiday season and all the best in the new year.

And keep an eye out for Santa and all those ”NewspaperDirect Goodies” on his sleigh-bike.

Electronic Ink – what does the future hold?

December 19, 2006

Good day everyone.

Although this blog tries to focus mostly on PressDisplay, occasionally one of us will read something ”newsworthy” that especially attracts our attention, and on which we’d like to get your thoughts.

On Dec 13, John Dodge, Editor-in-Chief of Design News, wrote an article called “Electronic Ink puts indelible stamp on newspapers“, where he raises the question of whether e-ink could be the magic bullet that reverses the nationwide newspaper slide.  He suggests that electronic ink could be to newspapers and books what ipods are to music and videos.

There is no question that e-ink is a very interesting technology.  I don’t know if you remember, but in 2002, Stephen Spielberg introduced movie goers to e-ink in his sci-fi thriller, “Minority Report”, where a man on the metro reads a “live” plastic electronic issue of USA TODAY, where stories change on the fly as the news changes. It was so cool.

But that was 4 years ago and a lot has changed since then.  The sophistication of handheld devices has reached a level where one begins to wonder whether specialized devices like an e-ink newspaper or even an iPod will still have a market.  With Nokia and Motorola, through their mobile phones, now the world’s leading producers of cameras, isn’t the writing on the wall for a single use device? The trend is clearly accelerating towards multi-functional mobile devices – a “Swiss Army Knife” of communications.  Therefore where does e-ink fit in to this future (if at all…)?

In the January 2007 issue of Newspaper and Technology magazine, NewspaperDirect’s VP of Busines Development, Alex Gruntsev, will share some thought-provoking views on the future of e-ink.  I encourage you to read it (I’ll post a quick link to it when it’s published) and then tell me what YOU think.

Some suggestions from subscribers

December 13, 2006

Today I learned about a feature request, from our Customer Service Manager, that I’d like to share with you.

A subscriber for one of our Smart Edition papers, The Washington Post,  suggested that we include the by-line in the preview snippet of the stories listed in the Table of Contents.

Check out this picture below. Notice when you click on the Table of Contents control at the top of the window and hover over a page, all the aritcles on that page are listed for you.  You just click the one you want to read.

Nerw feature request

The subscriber’s suggestion was to add the author’s name to the snippet.   He indicated that he likes opinion pieces and this extra information would help him decide if he wanted to read the article or not.

Sounds like a good idea to me….it’s off to the folks in R&D.

We have also received requests for the ability to print the whole newspaper instead of just one page.  Unfortunately, our publishers would not be very happy about this.  In fact, we are legally not allowed to offer this feature and you can probably guess why.  If we were to allow this, a monthly subscriber paying less than $10 per month could print an unlimited number of a daily paper and sell them on the street, with no revenue going to the publisher.   So our hands are tied here.   So subscribers can print a single page using PressDisplay, but that’s the best we can offer.  We have other services at NewspaperDirect for people who want to print full newspapers.  Just check out our Print On Demand service for more information.

I’d love to hear more suggestions on improvements to PressDisplay.   And I’d love you to post them here so everyone can see them.

NewspaperDirect at National Press Day Conference in Portugal

December 12, 2006

Hello everyone

Just wanted to share what one of our star performers from NewspaperDirect has been up to lately.   In November, Igor Smirnoff, Director of Strategic Development was invited to speak at the National Press Day Convention organized and hosted by the Portuguese Editors and Publishers’ Association.

NewspaperDirect Presents to Publishers at National Press Day

Igor shared with national and regional publishers new technological innovations, new markets and methods of content delivery being offered through NewspaperDirect’s Print-on-Demand, PressDisplay.com and SmartEdition platforms.

This was just one stop in a “4 cities in 1 week” hectic travel schedule in Europe, the UK and North America.   Igor is kept very busy due to the rapidly growing interest in our SmartEdition platform.    Many of our publishers who make their publications available on PressDisplay.com have adopted the PressDisplay platform technology (we call it SmartEdition) for their own epapers.  Check out some of these:

Times Online (UK)

Telegraph (UK)

New York Post (USA)

Le Figaro (France)

The Irish Times (Ireland)

More are listed on the PressDisplay.com site and we have more than a dozen new ones launching this month alone.

Welcome back Igor…do you know what day this or what city you’re in?

Tis the Season

December 11, 2006

Only 2 weeks until Christmas and the Digital team at NewspaperDirect is starting to celebrate.  Santa’s elves were busy tree trimming last week when no one was around.

Looks like Igor is a little too attached to this tree.  It’s time to let go, Igor….

Can blogs beat papers to a pulp? (Saturday – Weekend Review, 02 Dec 2006, Page 16)

December 4, 2006

Well, fellow bloggers, I’d like to get your thoughts on this article. Seems to really paint a pretty negative picture for the future of traditional journalists.

So…what can be done to take this “problem” and turn it into an opportunity to bridge mainstream media and the blogging community in a way that benefits us all?

PressDisplay Referral Program

December 1, 2006

Hello everyone…

As promised, here is an outline of the new PressDisplay.com Referral Program that was launched in September 2006.  This program is in its early stages of development and so let me tell you what we have now and what’s coming soon.

Note, this program will replace our current Affiliate Program, opening up new opportunities for more people to become marketing partners of PressDisplay.com.

What we have now…
Currently the PressDisplay Referral Program gives subscribers the potential to earn money simply by sharing articles or pages by email or through their blogs.  In other words…if you share an article with someone and he/she becomes a paid subscriber to PressDisplay, you earn a commission based on their subscription plan.

For the first 99 paid referrals, you earn a commission rate of 10%. For each month where you have 100 or more paid referrals, you earn a commission rate of 15%.  Note on paid referrals for monthly subscriptions, you will receive your commission for up to 3 years, from the date of the first payment.

One of the nice things about this plan is that subscribers can now see an up to date status of their referrals by viewing their Referral Report.  Just select My Services/My Account and then choose Referrals on the left hand side of the screen.

PressDisplay Referral Report

Every time your account balance reaches $25.00 or more, you can request partial or total payment of your earned referral amount which will be remitted to you through PayPal in U.S. dollars.

To redeem your earned referral commission, click on the Referrals link on the left hand side of the referral report screen, scroll down and click the [Redeem Now] button. You must ensure that the email address you have used to create your PressDisplay account is registered with your PayPal account to receive payment.

Sharing Articles

Sharing articles through email or blogging is very easy.  Just open an article in text mode and either click on the envelope icon to send it in an email or the “B” icon to post it to your blog.

Sharing Bookmarks in PressDisplay

Once the article is shared, we take care of the rest.  Just check your referral report from time to time and redeem your commission.

This new Referral Program is in effect now, and as I mentioned earlier, it will form the basis of our new Affliate Program.  This would mean that affiliates would be paid commissions on subscriptions and single purchase of publications and not on clicks.

What we plan to add to this program very shortly….

1. Banners, Buttons and Links

With the current Affiliate Program, we offered:

  • text links – to the home page of PressDisplay.com, individual titles or groups of titles (e.g. by language, country)
  • thumbnails for individual newspapers or groups
  • banners

Soon we will be offering more powerful “widgets” for referrers to use on their web sites and blogs to promote PressDisplay.  These will include the following elements from PressDisplay:

• The Slide Show from the PressDisplay homepage.

This widget would run on your site just like it does on PressDisplay.  We plan on offering the ability to filter the pictures to show the ones that you want, rather than all the ones we currently show each day.

PressDisplay Slide Show Widget

• Newsline, Most Discussed, News by Category or Top Stories widgets

As with the slide show, we’ll provide a number of other widgets that will run on your site.

PressDisplay Widgets
If you wanted to, you could practically create the whole home page of PressDisplay on your site with all these widgets ;)

2. Set up a monitor for a friend

With this feature, you could set up a monitor on behalf of a friend or colleague. When the monitor triggers as a result of an article being published containing the keywords you chose, an email would be sent to your friend with a link to that story.  (see the post “Monitoring just the news” for tips on how to set up a monitor).

For example, if you know of someone who is an executive in a company and needs to stay on top of her company’s name in the news or the competition, you could set up a monitor of her company’s or competitor’s name and every time the name showed up in a PressDisplay publication, they would be informed immediately via email.  They would be able to read the story for free.

If after reading the story, she wanted to buy the paper or subscribe, you would once again be credited with commission for that sale as described above (single or recurring).

3. Gift subscriptions

We are also going to allow people to send a monthly subscription to PressDisplay.com to friends and family as a gift.  If the receiver chooses to renew the subscription when the gift subscription expires, the originator of the gift would once again receive a commission on the renewal (same as above – one time or recurring).

Summary

The new Referral Program has a number of benefits for affiliates.  It:

  • Opens opportunities to add many new members to our program without having to negotiate contracts and pre-authorize affiliates.  This does open up some security risks, which is why we are moving to a commission based model over the pay-per-click model
  • Pays recurring commissions (like a revenue sharing plan).  10-15% recurring commission for up to 3 years is one of the highest paying programs in the industry.
  • Offers more tools to support affiliates in their marketing of PressDisplay
  • Is not impacted by pricing plan changes down the road

Thanks for taking the time to review this program.  Now, I’d like to hear from you on how you think we can improve it even further.
