I’m not sure if you recall an article last summer about the New York Times using Microsoft’s newsreader for users to read the NYT paper offline, but more recently the Seattle Post-Intelligencer also announce the same thing.
It was interesting that these two stories receive so much attention. In fact, many of our publishers wondered why we weren’t making a lot more noise about our PressReader since with only 1 software download, people can save any of our 450+ publications to their computer or UMPC or tabletPC or smart mobile phone. With the Microsoft newsreader, users have to download new software for every different newspaper.
I downloaded the Seattle PI (that uses MS newsreader) this AM and it took 20 minutes. I’m not sure I’d do that again. I also had to log off my machine and login as an adminstrator to do the download because we have security restrictions on software downloads at work and most employees are not allowed to download software themselves (I happen to have the permission, but I still have to login as admin to do it). For most other employees, they have to ask the IT dept to do it for them. That’s okay with a single download of code, but if you had to download code for every newspaper you wanted to read offline, I think the IT dept might have a little trouble with that, especially at 20 minutes a pop!
So I thought I’d “make a little noise” about our PressReader to keep our publishers happy who want it promoted and let you know how it is different from the MS NewsReader. Here’s a little comparision table….
So if you want to download and save any number of newspapers from a choice of over 450, I think you should check out PressReader.
But, if you’d rather spend 20 minutes downloading separate code for each paper available with the MS reader (I think there are 2, maybe 3 right now supported) and only get part of the paper, not the whole issue, then you should ask yourself….WHY!

I downloaded the New York Times Reader program and have been using it during their beta test period. To be honest, it has been a buggy program from the start. You do not get the entire newspaper, something that aggrevated me. However, they are coming out of their beta period at the end of March and will be adding in those “missed” portions of their daily newspaper, namely the crossword and classified sections.
Oh, they are charging $165 a year for the program and still do not have a Mac OS version yet.
I have been using the PressDisplay reader for months now with my New York Post edition. One of the major weaknesses is that lack of a Mac OS reader, which I have been told via email is being worked on. I look forward to this rendition of PressReader so I can truly junk my Windows OS.

Good news….I just heard from our CTO that the MAC OS version of PressReader will be ready in 4-6 weeks. I know a lot of people have been waiting for it.
We’ll make a big announcement as soon as it released, so keep watching.

There is a beta version of the MAC reader now on PressDisplay.com.
Just click on the download/save icon when you are reading a paper and it will prompt you to download the reader to your system. OR you can clck on the “Get PressReader 5″ menu item in the far left column of the PressDisplay.com home page. It will take you to a landing page which allows you to download our reader for the PC, MAC or smart mobile phones.
Give it a try and let us know what you think.

I tried using Pressreader on macpro but cannot past the authorisation stage because I get an error which says “Alert. System error: Unable to parse XML package. OK”
I have no clue what this means. I however have been the Windows Vista version on the same computer via Parallels Desktop. I use safari 3 beta, if it’s of any relevance.

Our Beta Mac PressReader currently does not support a browser platform higher than the Safari 2.0.1.
I suggest that if you would like to use PressReader on your Mac Pro that you use this version of the browser.

Hi, I am using leopard and safari version 3. Press display does not work on leopard, it is really frustrating. The beta version for press display has been out for a long time…when are mac’s users going to get a fully functional version that supports safari and the new mac osx software?
