NewspaperDirect to participate at TH(ink) eReaders 2010 Summit

March 10th, 2010 No comments

mediaIDEAS, an independent research strategy organization, labels eReaders as one of the most disruptive technologies of the early 21st Century.  On Wednesday March 10 at the TH(ink) eReaders 2010 Summit in New York City, the who’s who of the eReader and digital publishing world will come together for a half day to discuss exactly how these disruptive technologies can work for you, not against you.

Nikolay Malyarov, NewspaperDirect’s Director of Digital Media and Legal Affairs, will be right in the thick of things as he’ll participate in a panel discussing eReaders and the most relevant questions surrounding them – questions such as:

  • What are the keys to an immersive magazine, book, and Newspaper reading environment and can these be achieved on an eReader?
  • What developments over the next year will be coming to the eReader hardware space?
  • How will the user experience change over the next year with eReader software?
  • How do eReaders fit in a publisher’s range of delivery options?
  • How will publishers make money on the eReader platforms? What role will advertising play?
  • What affect will the Apple tablet and the tablet market in general, have on the ePaper and eReader market?
  • Is there room for more proprietary content platforms like those from Apple and Amazon?

By the end of it all, attendees will have a better understanding of eReader technology, developments in the eReader world and the financial opportunities afforded to those who include eReaders and eReader potential directly into their business models.

Stay tuned!

Are you a PressDisplay.com subscriber and (or soon to be) an enTourage eDGe owner?  Rejoice!  Today at the Abu Dhabi Media Summit, a new partnership was announced between NewspaperDirect and Entourage Systems Inc. that will see PressDisplay’s 1,500+ newspapers and magazines available on the eDGe via wireless or USB connection.

“Partnering with NewspaperDirect allows us to provide our customers with a robust catalogue of US and international newspapers, satisfying their media consumption needs even further,” said Asghar Mostafa, CEO of enTourage Systems. “The enTourage eDGe is an ideal platform for PressDisplay fans, allowing them to engage content when on the move like never before.”

As the world’s first dualbook with hinged E-ink and LCD screens, the eDGe offers several features that make it an appealing choice to consumers by:

  • Combining the functionality of eReaders, tablet netbooks and notepads
  • Providing users with an exceptional newspaper and magazine reading experience with a large 1,200 x 825 pixel, glare-free E-ink screen
  • Supporting story annotation using the stylus or text – either by hand or using the virtual keyboard

These points, and the fact that PressDisplay is available on such a diverse range of platforms, are reiterated by NewspaperDirect’s CEO, Alex Kroogman:

“The dual screen and exceptional viewing quality of the enTourage eDGe makes reading a newspaper while on the go an even better experience.  As the leader in expanding the number of ways consumers can access newspapers and magazines, we are continually adding new devices, and we’re delighted to add the enTourage eDGe to our line-up. The moment a device is supported by PressDisplay.com, it’s also made available to NewspaperDirect publishing partners for their own e-papers.”

Well, there are lots of choices out there!  Once you choose a platform that works for you, we promise reading the news through PressDisplay won’t disappoint!

NewspaperDirect Expands Operations

March 8th, 2010 No comments

In November, NewspaperDirect embarked on an aggressive plan to expand and improve its production line and quality control systems.  This plan not only involved a physical move into a brand new facility, but also major investments in technology and system upgrades.  Here’s what’s been happening:

To address the 30% increase in titles in the past year and anticipation of an even bigger increase in 2010, NewspaperDirect urgently needed to quadruple its operations staff on its production and quality control lines.  The existing facility could not accommodate that growth, so the company secured a new building and designed a much larger and more productive workspace to house our new employees and equipment.

And a dedicated trainer was hired to ensure new employees received the training necessary to maximize productivity as quickly as possible.

The design of the new facilities paid close attention to ergonomic factors to ensure a healthy work environment; while workflow and process improvements were undertaken to ensure a more motivating workplace for the team.  A happy team is a productive team, right?

In terms of technology, Operations doubled its already significant bandwidth capacity, increased redundancy in terms of power and Internet, and upgraded its network backbone.

As a result of these major investments, NewspaperDirect is only days away from:

  • Quadrupling our capacity,
  • Increasing redundancies in our production systems,
  • Drastically improving our operating efficiencies, and
  • Enhancing our quality control systems

As you can imagine, running concurrent operations for a 24/7/365 department across two facilities, while trying to move from one to the other is never easy. Even with contingency planning in place, some things can slip through the cracks.  So I want to apologize for any inconvenience these growing pains may have caused you - our valued customers and publishers.  And I want to thank you for your patience as we wrap up these upgrades to our operations.

Here’s where we are today…

  • The move into the new building has completed,
  • Vital systems have been installed,
  • Upgrades have been applied, and
  • The old facility has been shutdown.

Now, the only thing remaining is the hiring and training of the new staff, which began this past weekend and will continue over the next couple of weeks.

According to the Vice President of Operations, James Woloszyn, “We are already seeing a stabilization of operations with all key resources completely focused on getting us immediately to where we should be in terms of reliability and the highest quality. Although some challenges were encountered along the way, I am pleased with the final result and absolutely confident we will be operating at full capacity within a very short period of time.”

In the meantime, I’ll keep you up to date on where we’re at with these changes so you can see the progress we’re making towards our final goal of a world class production line, second to none!
