Day 4 Feature Athlete: Ye Shiwen

August 1st, 2012 No comments

Chinese swimmer, Ye Shiwen, 16, made headline news recently when she broke a world record in the 400m individual medley. She swam faster than US swimmer, Ryan Lochte when he won Gold in the men’s event.

Her incredible swim spawned allegations of doping from John Leonard, the executive director of the World Swimming Coaches Association, calling her feat “unbelievable”.

Olympic organizers and the swimming’s governing body was quick to defend Shiwen, calling the doping allegations “crazy” and stating “It’s very sad we can’t applaud a good performance. Let’s give the benefit of a doubt to the athletes.”

Ye Shiwen has earned Gold medals in the 200m individual medley and 400m individual medley.
