Day 6 Feature Athlete: Gabrielle Douglas

Dominating headlines worldwide, it’s no surprise Gabrielle Douglas is today’s feature athlete.

At sixteen years old, Douglas is the first African-American woman to earn the biggest prize in the Games Gymnastics, the Gold medal and all-around title. With a score of 62.232, she beat Russian gymnast Victoria Komova by less than three-tenths of a point. Aliya Mustafina, also Russian, took home the Bronze medal.

Day 6 of the London 2012 Games

Day 6 of the Games became another historic day for Team USA, winning 5 Gold medals in one day. Most notably, Gymnast Gabrielle Douglas, 16, became the first African-American woman to win Gold in both individual all-around and team competitions. Her amazing performance dominated headlines of dozens of newspapers.

Michael Phelps also won another well-earned Gold medal in the 200m individual medley. With a total of 20 medals, 16 of them Gold, Phelps is the all time title holder for most Gold medals. No other Olympian has ever even reached the double digits.
