“Interesting Times” for Publishers

December 15th, 2010 No comments

Not too many months ago, it was almost impossible to find an article, news report or analysis that did not forecast doom and gloom for the publishing industry. Few argued that newspapers were in crisis, with falling circulation, repeated rounds of layoffs, fleeing advertisers and a chain of bad earning reports.

But then came the iPad…

And suddenly, the future was looking very rosy indeed. Suddenly, publishers were jumping on the iPad bandwagon building iPad applications that they believed would turn their future around.

Sadly, they forgot about the fundamentals of profitable publishing, such as “growing audited circulation”. Instead they created “innovative” applications that gave away their valuable content for free, and did nothing for their ABC numbers or their bottom line.

Do you feel a déjà vu moment coming on? Doesn’t this sound like the 1990s when publishers flocked to the Internet believing it would be their savior? And look how that turned out!

Mobile Wave or Tsunami?

No, the iPad is not the panacea for the publishing industry. It’s just one device – one small channel in a mobile market that is becoming more complex by the week with the explosion of new smartphones, tablets and eReaders landing in the hands of readers. The publishing industry is entering an era of “interesting times” and publishers cannot survive, let alone, thrive in it alone.

I invite all publishers to check out our new video about this new wave of technology, and the opportunities and risks it brings to publishers.   And then contact us at publishing@newspaperdirect.com to discuss how NewspaperDirect can help you prosper in these “interesting times” by increasing your:

Recap: Digital Media Asia 2010

November 29th, 2010 3 comments

If nothing else, the 2010 edition of Digital Media Asia, held November 24th to 26th, helped reaffirm that 2011 will be another year on the up and up for NewspaperDirect!

With successful presentations and talks offered up by NewspaperDirect’s own Vice President, Digital, Igor Smirnoff, the event provided an opportunity to make significant inroads with publishers from Hong Kong, India, Malaysia and Africa not to mention with several publishers from the host nation of Singapore.

The event also saw Samsung Electronics showcase their increasingly popular Galaxy Tab device, where, during the presentation, PressReader just so happened to be well featured and highly touted by Samsung executives :) .

So, what does this mean for PressDisplay.com subscribers and PressReader users?

Well, it means that in addition to the 1,700+ local, national and international newspapers and magazines already available on platforms like the Samsung Galaxy Tab, iPad, iPhone, BlackBerry (and soon to be available on all Android powered devices), the coming year will offer an even wider, more diverse range of publications on more and more amazing platforms hitting the market.  What’s not to like about that?!

If you haven’t yet tried PressDisplay.com or PressReader, give it a try today!

Cheers,

Michael

Samsung launches its new GALAXY Tab – TechRadar.com & Australian PC Authority review PressReader

September 23rd, 2010 3 comments

Hey…psst…we haven’t formally announced this yet, but just between you, me and the World Wide Web, did you hear about the latest PressReader app pre-installed on the world’s newest, most highly anticipated tablet?

If you haven’t, here’s a little something that’ll hopefully wet your beak… :) .

Earlier this month at the IFA 2010 trade show in Berlin, Germany, Samsung announced the launch of its GALAXY Tab, powered by Android Operating System 2.2.

The device marks Samsung’s first foray into the tablet market and if early reviews are any indication, the Tab promises to give the iPad and other tablet-like devices a run for their money.

With a PC-like web browsing experience, 7” touch screen, continuous communications via e-mail, voice and video call, SMS/MMS and social networks and easy access to news, books and multi-media content, Samsung is banking on the GALAXY Tab offering users more capabilities while they’re on run.

And with PressReader an integral part of the Tab’s ‘Readers Hub’, users will benefit from an immensely popular news application that delivers immediate access to over 1,700 full-content publications from 92 countries in 48 languages in their truest form.

TechRader.com, in their assessment of PressReader went as far as saying, “The newspaper viewer is an interesting one … One nice feature is the ability to tap on any story and see it presented on the screen in its own right – making viewing a newspaper in the way you want much easier.  Samsung claims the Galaxy Tab will ‘play an important role in the digitization of printed material’ and if newspaper subscriptions all look this good on the Tab then we can see why.”

Happy days!

John Gillooly in his review of the GALAXY Tab for Australian PC Authority says the device’s, “16:9 screen is particularly well suited, and PressDisplay, for example, reflows stories to fit the screen when text is selected.”

Get a glimpse of John previewing PressReader on the GALAXY Tab at around the 2:55 mark of the video embedded in his article.  Great stuff!

So remember, whether you’re a casual news reader or an avid newspaper junkie reading online, offline, at work, at home or on the go, we’re confident PressReader for GALAXY Tab will help quash your appetite for full-content daily news ;) .

Cheers,

-Michael

Why Students Need PressDisplay.com

September 10th, 2010 2 comments

Recently, Joshua-Kim Campion, an avid user of NewspaperDirect’s PressDisplay.com service, emailed in to share his thoughts on why he considers PressDisplay.com a service he can’t, and other students shouldn’t, live without.

Here’s what he had to say:

Is it still possible in 2010 to succeed in life without a degree? You know, the “American Dream”? The house, the wife, the dog, the kids… We often hear that the future belongs to educated people, those who actually have that college or university degree in their pockets. I’ve been reflecting on this a lot lately as I was looking into the possibility of going back to school to get that mandatory paper everyone is talking about, which I proudly did a couple weeks ago, but all of this thinking got me to wonder: Is it a guarantee of success for the rest of my life? What about global knowledge? Being informed? Know what’s happening in the world? Isn’t it something that’s also important to succeed in life? Haven’t I been able to do it for all those years, with great success?

Wherever you’re from, whatever language you speak, when you’re studying to get a degree, you need to get your information out of somewhere. You need to expand your horizons; you need to do further research to get different opinions to be able to make your own.  Books are good, libraries are good, but in 2010, in the information era, one needs to have access to valuable information from multiple sources, quickly and easily; one needs to have access to all of these different opinions to improve their knowledge to further succeed in life. I strongly believe that the future belongs to those who can see the whole forest and not only the tree in front of them.

Being an information and media addict, always wanting to expand my horizons, know more, I got the chance to discover an amazing product about a year ago, which is Pressdisplay.com by NewspaperDirect. The company currently offers 1670 fully digitalized newspapers, from 92 countries and in 48 different languages, which you can access from multiple platforms: computers, smartphones, Irex and the new Samsung Galaxy Tablet that’s been announced on September 2nd 2010.

This is the dream product for any college or university student. Not only can you entertain yourself by reading the newspaper online or on your iPhone while riding the bus, you can do research on the subject you’re studying, maybe get an out-of-the-box theory from an Australian journalist that would blow everybody’s mind? If you’re on the go, you can listen to your newspaper while driving, working, studying (shhhhhh!!!). If you’re an international student, you can keep in touch with your country by reading your local newspaper, every morning, in your language. This is a great way to stay connected with your environment, wherever you are; an amazing opportunity to increase your global knowledge; even a great tool to assist in learning languages with its built in translation tool. You have a major research to make on a specific subject? Their monitoring option allows you to set-up alerts on different products, companies… Whatever field you’re in, there’s an endless academic use to PressDisplay.

I’ve been using the product for more than a year now and wouldn’t know how to get by without it… And you’ve got to admit, it feels good to save a tree here and there :) .

Joshua-Kim Campion

Thanks for the kind words Joshua-Kim!
