The flame that lit up London for six weeks is now out! The flame was extinguished yesterday during the Paralympic Closing Ceremonies, marking an end to London’s golden summer and successful Games.
The ceremony took the audience on a journey through the seasonal ancient and modern festivals from Autumn to Summer. Servicemen and women and the work of their main charity Help for Heroes was also honoured during the ceremonies. Captain Luke Sinnot, a double amputee who lost both legs and one arm in Afghanistan, scaled to the top of a flag pole to raise the Union flag.
The parade of Paralympians were joined by millions of viewers around the world and treated to performances by Coldplay, Jay Z, Rihanna and a cast of 1,336 performers.
Another amazing Games is now complete and the spotlight now turns to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the 2016 Summer Games!

The Paralympics have reported a new record in ticket sales! More than 2.7 million tickets have been sold this year which is more than 900,000 more than the 2008 Beijing Paralympics. Part of the sales success is attributed to the affordability of the tickets with more than half the tickets available for only £10 or less.
A new record has also been set by cyclist turned swimmer, Sarah Storey. The 34 year old won the Women’s Road Race, earning her 11th gold medal and making her Britain’s most successful female Paralympian on Thursday.
Jonnie Peacock of Great Britain also won Gold yesterday in the most anticipated race of the 2012 Paralympic’s, the clash of the blade runners. The 19 year old earned the title of the world’s fastest amputee runner with a world record time of 10.58 seconds. He defeated South Africa’s medal favorite Oscar Pistorious who came in fourth place.

The Games may be over but the Paralympics have brought Britain back to life!
Last Wednesday, the Opening Ceremonies welcomed 165 countries and 4,200 Paralympians. The theme was “Enlightenment” and featured a voyage across “a sea of ideas”. And who better to welcome the Paralympians than Stephen Hawking, a world renown physicist that has shown the world that physical disabilities don’t limit human potential.
It’s already Day 8 so let’s jump right into the Games!
Italian ex-Formula One Star, Alex Zanardi, celebrated a triumphant victory today after winning Gold in the Men’s Individual H4 Time Trial. Zanardi lost both his legs in a horrific crash in 2001 and only stopped motor racing 3 years ago. He finished more than 27 seconds ahead of German Norbert Mosandl, with American Oscar Sanchez taking home the bronze.
Canada’s own Summer Mortimer celebrated a record setting win yesterday after winning her second Gold medal in Women’s S10 backstroke. She set a new world record time of just one minute and 5.09 seconds, beating New Zealand’s Sophie Pasco by 1.60 seconds. Shireen Shapiro of South Africa took home the Bronze at 1:09.02.

A dazzling display of fireworks and performances from Britain’s top talent brought the London 2012 Games to an end. From supermodel Kate Moss to the new boy band One Direction and a show stopping reunion with the Spice Girls, there was something for everyone. With 80,000 fans watching, screaming, and singing along, organizers estimated 300 million or more were watching from home.
Following Games tradition, a portion of the celebrations were turned over to Brazil, host of the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, where the mayor of London handed the Games flag back to the International Olympic Committee boss, Jacques Rogge.
Weeks earlier, Londoners were worried the Games would turn into a huge fiasco, with security woes and empty seats but Team Great Britain proved it was all worth it. They took home their biggest medal haul since 1908, a grand total of 65 medals, 29 of them Gold, 17 Silver, and 19 Bronze.

USA and Spain ended the Games with a 107-100 victory over Spain in Men’s Basketball, duplicating their Gold medal win against Spain in the Beijing final four years ago. Their Gold medal win brings USA the coveted title of most medals with a grand total of 104 medals, 46 of them Gold, 29 Silver, and 29 Bronze.
Mo Farah of Great Britain also made history when he won the Men’s 5000 meters and the 10,000 meters, earning him two Gold medals. His last lap timed at 52.9 seconds sent the crowd of 80,000 screaming louder than his 10,000 meter victory as Farah put his hand over his mouth in disbelief of his achievement. Farah is the first Brit to win both these races as no Brit has ever won either of these races in Games history.

English Boxer and Gold medalist Nicola Adams is today’s feature athlete. Adams, 29, beat the defending champion, China’s Cancan Ren, in a thrilling 16 – 7 victory. Her Gold medal makes her Britain’s first ever female Olympic boxing champion.
Her road to success wasn’t easy though, as Adams nearly gave up the sport because no one would sponsor her. In 2007, Adams was the first to win a European boxing medal, and in 2008, won the first World Championship medal. Despite her success, Adams still struggled financially as she still couldn’t get funding. She had to take odd jobs on building sites and even worked as an extra on a soap opera.
Adams finally got financial backing in 2009 when the International Olympic Committee backed Women’s Boxing for the first time.

Team Jamaica was an unstoppable force on Day 14 of the Games. Jamaica dominated the Men’s 200 meter podium and swept up all three medals! Usain Bolt came in first place, earning him another Gold medal, and making him the first Olympian to win both the 100 and 200 meter sprint at consecutive Games. Yohan Blake won Silver and Warren Weir took home the Bronze.
Day 14 also marked the start of BMX Cycling. Best friends and rivals Tory Nyhaug of Canada and Connor Fields of USA competed against each other but unfortunately Nyhaug failed to qualify for the semi-finals by just one point. Fields, Australian Sam Willoughby, and defending Gold medalist Maris Strombergs of Latvia were among the riders to move onto the semi-finals.
Events coming up for this weekend include Synchronized Swimming, Men’s 4 x 100 meter relay and Men’s Basketball.

Day 13 of the Games saw Canada’s medal hopeful Carol Huynh capture a Bronze medal in the 48-kilograph women’s freestyle wrestling. Huynh, the 2008 Beijing Gold medalist, beat Isabelle Sambou of Senegal after winning tie-breaking clinches in both rounds.
Australia’s Sally Pearson had a record setting Gold medal victory in the 100m hurdles. Her time of 12.35 seconds gave her a narrow win, beating USA’s Dawn Harper’s time of 12.37 seconds. Pearson’s win is a rare one for Australia, as she is the first Australian hurdling champion in over 40 years. Kellie Wells of USA took home Bronze with a time of 12.48.
Events coming up today for Day 14 of the London 2012 Games include Women’s Wrestling, Women’s Soccer with the much anticipated USA vs. Japan match, and Men’s BMX.

A veteran to the Summer Games, Canada’s equestrian rider, Ian Millar, is today’s feature athlete. At 65 years old, Millar made his 10th Summer Games appearance and finished tied for ninth place with two other competitors. He started competing in the games back in 1972 at the Munich Games and hasn’t missed one since.
In a press conference prior to the start of the competition, Millar expressed interest in returning for the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. “It depends on the horses”, he said. “This old job is a lot more fun and rewarding when you’re riding a good horse, and the horse I have now, Star Power, is quite a fantastic horse. He’s 11, so next time around, he’d be still well within range, so if he’s wiling, I’m willing.”
The oldest Olympian competing in the London 2012 Games is 71 year old Hiroshi Hoketsu of Japan, also an equestrian rider.
