Downloading papers automatically would be an amazing feature for the iPhone and iPod Touch Apps. Hopefully we'll get there in the not so distant future! In the mean time though, you can adjust the auto-lock feature on your Touch. If you go into settings > general > auto-lock, you have several options to prevent it from locking so quickly.
