Will the PressDisplay mobile software designed for the Apple Iphone work on the new Ipod Touch (which seems to be the Iphone without the phone)?
If so, will Ipod Touch users be able to contact the PressDisplay site for reading with their subscriptions through the wireless interface? Will it be possible to download a newspaper for later reading?
PressDisplay.com does run on the iPod Touch using a WIFI connection so PressDisplay subscribers can access all of their newspapers from the iPod Touch.
There is no reader, however, for the iPhone or iPod Touch at this time, so you cannot yet download your newspapers to those devices. You can download them to your MAC, however, using the beta release of PressReader for the MAC.
Hope this helps…
Gayle
Why does the PressDisplay edition of USA Today only have 8 pages, while the print edition has much more…as much as 48? Don’t you think you are misleading people by providing only a small portion of USA Today in comparison to the print edition?
Hello Thomas.
Thanks for pointing out that discrepancy with USA Today. We are sent a PDF by the publisher every morning with what they want to show in their digital edition on PressDisplay. The majority of our publishers send us an exact replica of their print edition. I can see, in the case of USA Today, that they don’t send us all the pages. That is disappointing…
I am very sorry about that. I have sent a note to the publishing group to see if they can convince the publisher to provide the whole paper in the future. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
Gayle
Are you planning to do a version of PressReader for Linux?
Hello Iain
Thanks for your comment.
There are no firm plans for a Linux version yet, but I have sent your request to the product team to let them know that there are users who would appreciate having PressReader running on Linux.
thanks
Gayle
I am also interested in having pressreader available for Linux. Now that ultra-portable laptops that run Linux are readily and cheaply available I think it would be a good market for you.
P.S. I have an Asus Eee PC (runs Linux by default) which has a reasonable amount of horizontal realestate, and would love to be able to switch my National Post subscription to digital, but cannot right now (as PressReader is win/mac only.)
Our library is currently intalling PressDisplay so that it can be used across campus.
They would like to provide off-campus access through our EZproxy web sever. Do you know if Press Display can work through EZproxy?
Hi John
To configure EZproxy for Library PressDisplay, please visit: http://www.usefulutilities.com/support/db/pressdisplay.html.
Thanks
Gayle
I’m also using Linux on my main PC and I have an eee as well so I’m looking forward to a ported PressReader application!
I Would llike to see a press Display app in the apple store for my iphone. It would be nice to be able to read it offline as well.
Hi Corry
PressDisplay for the iPhone is available through Apple’s store. Here is the link:
http://www.apple.com/webapps/news/pressdisplay.html
Cheers
Gayle
Yes, I too am very eagerly awaiting PressReader for Linux! The small tablets with Linux are so much less expensive, and I am holding off on getting PressReader until it supports Linux.
Count me also among those who crave a Linux version of PressReader!
Hi Gayle.
The revisions for the Mac Beta have been promising, and corrected a number of issues that I have contacted the support team about. Is there any other contact for providing feedback without having to go through the standard customer support responses (ie please just reinstall your program) that usually end up taking 3 or 4 emails for the issue to be recognised as something that may require a software revision?
Also, is there a timeline to provide an iPhone version of the reader?
I’d like to also make a request for a Linux version of PressReader. I’m a current subscriber to a publication but have changed computer to a Linux system. I can only read the publication online now.
Thanks
I’m very interested in a paid subscription. Can my husband and I access PressDisplay simultaneously?
Hi Morgan
Yes, you can have two simultaneous users on PressDisplay, but be aware that you have to login using one username and password. Up to 3 devices can be used for downloading PressReader if you want offline reading support – e.g. your laptop, your husband’s laptop and 1 mobile device, for example.
Hope this helps.
Gayle
it would be really great to see a linux version. i have pressreader running on my irex dr1000s so i guess that a linux version is there. why not make it available. thanks in advance
/bazmi.
I have just subscribed, and I would really like to have a Linux version too, because it’s my main operative system. Thanks!
Can you please add two UK regional titles, Liverpool Echo and Liverpool Daily Post?
Hi ANC
We actually are in dicussions with them
. We hope to add them to PressDisplay soon.
Thanks
Gayle
Just curious, when will you be releasing your offline iphone/itouch app?
Hi Ian
It should not be too much longer. We are submitting the app to Apple this week for certification. So hopefully that will go smoothly so we can release it.
cheers
Gayle
Could you update us on the Linux version development?
I too use this OS for most of my work and look forward to a Linux version.
Thanks!
Another vote for a Linux version here.
Although I have the WINE emulator running, I still have problems trying to load it. Probably best just to go back to the paper version I suppose?
How’s the apple testing going for the Iphone/Ipod touch offline app? I assume you’ll announce it on the blog when it’s available. Thx
Hi Ian
The application is with Apple and going through testing. We are anxious for them to finish as much as everyone. Here’s a video of the application to show you what’s coming.
I will be shouting it from the rooftops as soon as it is released by Apple; you can be sure of that!
Cheers
Gayle
Another request for linux version. I have Irex digital reader, and would like to use the pressdisplay software preinstalled on the reader, but currently the only way I can download the newspaper is using the presdisplay software for a PC which is not available for Linux. So, even though pressdisplay gives a 30 month free subscription to irex users, I cannot use it
On Feb. 12/09 a blog post said “Well, today you’ll probably see our press release announcing our new our new iPhone Application that will soon been [sic] released .” Since Safari browsing with PressDisplay has been available for some time–and which I quite enjoy–I took this to mean that an actual iPhone app would be available through the iPhone store that would allow offline reading for iPhone and iPod Touch users. I haven’t seen anything, at least not on the Canadian app store. Was I misinterpreting this? Thanks
Hi David. Yes, you were right – we submitted our iPhone App to Apple a while back, but we’re struggling with getting approval because we want to offer it free to PressDisplay.com subscribers and Apple wants to charge our subscribers again to access newspapers on the iPhone.
We haven’t given up, but developing the application was the easy part – getting Apple to agree to our terms is another story.
Gayle
Hi Gayle. Do you mean Apple wants you to charge a fee for the app, or a subscription fee for using the app (similar to the current subscription fee on a PC)? If it is the first, I certainly would not object to paying a nominal fee for the app itself. I suspect many customers would agree. Paying another subscription fee, however, wouldn’t make much sense.
Hi David
Basically Apple makes it difficult to use a PressDisplay subscription on the iPhone. It’s not just an nominal App fee they’re looking for.
We’re continuing to try and find a way to make this work.
Thanks
Gayle
Hi there
I subscribed on the strength of a forth
coming iPhone app.
Any word on your dialogue with apple? Can we
as loyal pressdisplay subscribers help in lobbying? After all salesforce etc have propriety apps for their subscribers why are Apple being difficult ?
Jp
Hi Gayle,
no word on the iPhone app yet?
Any plans on developing an app for Palm’s webOS system?
Looking forward for positive news on these respects.
Cheers
Hey JR.
No news yet on the iPhone I’m afraid.
But we are doing an App for the Palm – we’re hoping to release it in Q4, so stay tuned for that!
Cheers
Gayle
I too am waiting for the press reader for linux. It should be coming soon becuase I plan to pull the plug on Windows world and will then cancel my subscription to the London Free Press
In “What’s New in Paid Content for Newspaper Publishers” (sept 16th) the article you link to says that “New applications are set for release for the iPhone and Blackberry in the coming weeks”…Dare we hope that the difficulties with Apple have been resolved for the ipod touch/iphone?
Thanks!
Hi Ian
We have gone back to Apple with a new proposal. Waiting to hear if/when it will be accepted.
Keep your fingers crossed.
Gayle
I am really hoping for the iPhone app. Have been desperate for it for some time. Hopefully you can resolve issues with Apple and release it!
Hi David
Well, it looks like Apple has a rather bizarre process for responding to application submissions. Apparently in the middle of Sept, the review person at Apple discovered something rather trivial he/she wanted changed, but he/she did not tell us until last week, even though we’ve been trying to reach them for weeks to find out where our App is.
It seems that Apple’s way of managing their workload is to wait a month after discovering an issue before telling the vendor about it. The fix for us was very easy and we turned it around in a day. But who knows when they will pick it up again. ARG!
I feel your pain! This is very frustrating.
Gayle
Yippee! I just heard that Apple has approved our App!!!! Not on itunes yet (hope by tomorrow or Thursday), but we finally got approval.
As soon as the link is up I’ll post it.
cheers
Gayle
YEA!!!!! Looking forward to it! Thanks!
I bought it straight away. It’s great and works really well. You guys have done a great job. Will post a comment on iTunes. Couple of queries:
In the blog post on the apps release you state it can be set up to do automatic downloads. How do I do this? I can’t see an option?
Also – if I am already a subscriber on a plan I still need to buy issues on the iPhone separately. Is that correct? I got some kind of message when I launched the app that I need to register it to my account but there is nothing about this in the account settings on the website.
Thanks for the great work!
David
Hey David. Automatic downloads were implemented, but not approved by Apple, so we’re trying to find a new way to offer them. That is going to require some updates to the application.
The application itself is free, and we offer 7 free downloads of titles, but after that you are correct….you have to pay 99 cents for each issue you download. Unfortunately Apple would not allow us to offer all titles for free to our current subscribers of PressDisplay. This battle has been going on for months, which delayed our release. Finally we gave into Apple and are charging for each issue, but we’re lobbying to get an exemption for our subscribers. It’s a very painful process.
Your payment for each title you download is done through your iTunes account, so you need an account on iTunes to purchase titles through PressReader.
Gayle
I’m happy to see that pressreader is in the app store for the iphone, but very disappointed that it won’t work on a first generation ipod touch. It requires a microphone which baffles me since I have never needed a microphone to read my newspapers on my desktop.
Hi John
I’ll check on that for you. The microphone is not a requirement, but our application runs only on O/S 3. What O/S are your running on your iPod? If it is 2, perhaps you can get an upgrade through iTunes to the new operating sytem? I’ll ask my developer if that’s possible.
Gayle
Thanks for the reply but I am using O/S 3.1.1 on my first generation iPod
touch and I can’t install the app from either iTunes on my touch or desktop as it says I need a microphone.
Maybe it is a limitation with the first generation iPod Touch only. Remember that this model doesn’t have Bluetooth capability, which the 2nd generation does, therefore, the audio packs might certainly be different.
In any case, PressReader works fine (audio feature included) on iPod Touch 2nd generation.
Now that is bizarre John. Let me check on that for you. I can’t imagine what that’s all about. I have an iPod Touch here and it’s fine. Back at your shortly…
Gayle
Let me be yet another voice here asking for Linux version….
Right now I am considering subscribing to read on the web version, a desktop app would have sealed the deal by now.
I don’t have access to any windows or mac software, im poor
(maybe thats why theres no linux version yet and more focus on iphone
)
Hi Sajal
Sorry to have to say that our limited resources must be applied to the projects with this highest demand by customers. Certainly mobile applications are a key focus for us because of this.
Linux has not been in high demand I’m afraid.
Gayle
Hi Gayle,
Thanks for clarifying.
In that case… id suggest next version be built on one of the multiplatform tools (like adobe air) . The effort would be in making and maintaining only one application (which would be compatible on windows/mac/linux and more..) …
Your reply even tho disappointing did score points for pressdisplay for being upfront and honest.
I guess ill have to stick to online version unless you change your mind about demand. Compared to 3 years ago, nowdays we see more and more web companies releasing and maintaining linux versions of their app.
–Sajal
Hi Sajal
I’ve passed along your suggestion to the development team.
Thanks!
Gayle
Hi Gayle,
repeating David’s concern, I am a monthly paid subscriber to the National Post’s digital edition, which I can download daily on PressReader’s Windows client at no extra charge. Does the iPhone app will require to pay extra for each daily copy of the same newspaper?
Good question Joe about the National Post digital edition. I do know that applications are being developed for our individual SmartEdition titles/
I sure hope that Apple will be flexible with those publishers and allow them to provide the apps for FREE to their subscribers if that’s what the publisher wants to do.
I guess we’ll know more when we (or the publisher) tries to submit the app to Apple. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!
Gayle,
Do you have any response to my queries above?
David
Thanks Gayle.
I paid 99c for the app and had to pay for all the titles I purchased – didn’t get 7 free or the app for free.
David
The “Free” app and titles were just implemented today. Sorry David – you were so quick on the draw and tried it out before we could add the “free” trial part. If you try downloading another title, you won’t have to pay for it.
Is it just me, or did the workaround solution to get the subscription issues (without paying extra to iTunes) stopped working?
Suggestion (if not yet addressed) in both PC and iPhone: automatic scheduled download of “subscribed” papers. Papers download takes too long (specially in iPhone). Thus, making it convenient to have papers early delivered (as in your door).
“Suggestion (if not yet addressed) in both PC and iPhone: automatic scheduled download of “subscribed” papers.”
This is easily done with the PC edition of PressReader. I download a number of papers this way every day. You set up subscriptions to the papers you want and PressReader checks for the latest issues every few minutes (at an interval you choose in the configuration). As soon as it finds that issue it starts downloading it. Of course, the PressReader program must be running on your PC. I just turn on my computer in the morning, start PressReader and the latest issues of my subscribed papers start downloading. If any current issues haven’t been posted, PressReader will find them within a few minutes of arrival. Of course, if you leave your computer on while you sleep PressReader will download issues before you wake up.
Can I just add my voice to this request from an iPhone perspective? Basically, subscriptions working on the iPhone would be great. Downloads can be both problematic and slow over 3G especially here in the UK with a flaky network!
Totally agree Paul. And I know that feature is in the works. So hopefully it won’t be long for it’s released.
What would be really useful in PressReader is a better print interface
with the ability to select which pages you want to print. If all the installed
pdf printers worked with pressreader the problem wouldn’t be so bad.
I still cannot get PressReader to print to some network printers and only some pdf printers work. Why can’t PressReader see all installed printers
and why can it print to some pdf printers but not Adobe Acrobat?
Will these bugs be sorted in a Linux version of PressReader?
I would also like to add my voice to needing a Linux version. More and more people are switching to Linux. Alternatively the suggestion for a multi-platform app such as Adobe Air is a good idea.
Thanks for your comment Danie. I have forwarded it to the product mgt team for their consideration
Cheers
Gayle
No questions today…just wanted to say how much I love the new iPAD version (especially the latest version where it starts instantly). Your programmers are doing an excellent job!
Hi Ian. Thanks for the positive feedback!
Cheers,
-Michael
Just inquiring as to whether an android version of pressreader is likely to be available. I’m accessing my newspaper directly via the web but would much prefer to download editions at home as mobile internet is very expensive in Australia.
Thanks
Hi Nelson,
Yes, our Android version of PressReader is right around the corner. We’ll be posting about when it’s released, so please keep an eye on the blog
.
Cheers,
Michael
“aroud the corner”….
28 oct 2010: any news for us, android users?
I have an HTC android 2.1 device…i don’t want to change it with a “big” samsung galaxy tab with android pressreader included…
Hi Tommy. Thanks for posting your comment.
I promise you won’t have to change your HTC device for the GALAXY Tab
.
PressReader will actually first be available on the GALAXY Tab the moment it’s released in the US (it’s looking like that’s November 15th) and will be available for other Android devices shortly after that and based on what I’ve seen from our Development Team, it’ll be worth the wait. The app is definitely looking slick!
Cheers,
Michael
Will it work with HTC phones running on Android?
Best,
Grot
Hi Grot,
It most certainly will but it’ll be a few weeks before PressReader is available in the Android Market. Keep checking back for the announcement!
Cheers,
Michael
Hi there, I am trying to activate on my iPad through the PressReader app. I am getting the error: too many activations. I assume this means I have too many authorized devices. I have a feeling my old iPad, which I have since sold, remains authorized. How would I go about deauthorizing it to free up a space? Thanks
Hi Ryan. Thanks for your question.
If you would like to de-authorize an old device, simply:
1. Login to http://www.pressdisplay.com
2. Click on My Services
3. Click on My Account
4. Click on PressReader in the left-pane menu
5. De-authorize the device you’re no longer using.
Hope this helps!
Cheers,
Michael
Hi Michael,
Just a quick question on what constitutes an ‘issue’ of a paper per the subscription plan. I noticed the fair use section mentions any downloading of 100+ issues for the personal plan to be deemed excessive use.
Would a section of a newspaper, i.e. the sports section of the Guardian be counted as its own ‘issue’ even if you are paying for the main paper as well? To be clearer, would these two items from the same newspaper on the same day be deemed to be 2 ‘issues’, or would they be viewed as part of 1 ‘issue’ and only counted as 1 item against the fair use quota?
Thanks,
Liam
Hi Liam – great question!
As long as one section of the newspaper (either the main paper or one if its supplements) is downloaded, any additional sections downloaded from the same newspaper would not count towards that limit. In your case, if you download the Guardian, the separate sports section (and any additional supplement available with the Guardian) would only be counted as 1 item against the fair use quota.
Cheers,
Michael
I notice that the Australian newspaper The Age has not appeared on the site for a few days. Is this a technical issue, or has the newspaper withdrawn from the service?
Thanks
Bruce
Hi Bruce. I apologize for the inconvenience. The issue with the age was indeed a technical one however it appears the most current issues are now available for download. Let me know if everything is OK on your end…
Cheers,
Michael
Hi
If I want to buy the Guardian on Saturday it has 9 different sections. Is each one £0.69 (which would cost me over £6!) or can I buy the whole paper including each section as one purchase for say £2 which is about what the paper version costs? And forgive me you can already do that, but if so how?
Thanks
Stu
Hi Stu. Thanks for your question!
If you download The Guardian (or any one of its supplements), you’re able to download all associated sections free of charge.
If you’re using PressReader for iPad, simply select The Guardian and tap the “Include Supplements” option prior to tapping the download button.
Let me know if you require any additional help.
Cheers,
Michael
My mates were amazed when I showed them that I’ve got Inquirer on my iPad. Thanks for this super app!
Hi,
Ive sed press reader for some time on my galaxy tab 7″ (Gingerbread). Unfortunately, i find the list of papers available on the website is different from the list available on the tab. I am especially interested in the Straits Times Singapore which i can access from the web but not my tab. Any ideas?
cheers
ashwin
Hi Ashwin. Thanks for your question.
The decision to make publications available online via PressDisplay and on various mobile platforms (iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Win 7) via PressReader is made by each individual publisher. While we encourage publishers to distribute their publications across each of these platforms, this unfortunately isn’t always the case. I suggest writing The Straight Times directly asking them to include it on PressReader.
Hope this helps!
Michael
Is there any chance of signing up The Desert Sun (Palm Springs CA) to PressDisplay?
Hi Nick. Thanks for your question. We’re continually adding new publications to PressDisplay and PressReader so the short answer is yes, there’s definitely a chance. I’ll pass along your request to our publishing team
.
Thanks!
Michael
Hi
Wondering why I still cannot access the Age?
Hi Judy. Unfortunately, the Age is restricted on PressReader & PressDisplay.com for residents of Australia. This restriction was put in place by Fairfax. I would encourage you to write to them directly to express your concerns.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Michael
Hi, although there are several updated publications in the Belgian section, I’m unable to download for instance “de morgen ” or “de standaard ” or any other. Always get a message saying that I’m not allowed to download from my place. How can I proceed to download some of them from within Belgium?
Thanks
Hi Danny,
Unfortunately these are regional restrictions imposed by these specific publishers. Ideally, we would want all of our users to have the ability to download any publication from any location. I would suggest you write the publisher directly and express your desire to downloed both De Morgen or De Standaard from within Belgium.
I hope that helps,
Best,
Michael
