Answer: PressDisplay.com “credits” apply to the purchase of publications through the PressDisplay.com service on a Pay As You Go basis.

1 PressDisplay.com credit equals 99 cents.

The majority of publications available through the PressDisplay.com service (and by extension, the PressReader application) require 1 credit for purchase on a Pay As You Go basis. In some instances, specific publications may require more than 1 credit for purchase at the request of individual publishers.

As PressDisplay.com credits are included in both the Personal Unlimited and Corporate Unlimited subscription types, only Pay As You Go subscribers are directly affected by the credit value assigned to individual publications.

  1. Navigate to your iPad or iPhone’s global “Settings”.
  2. Tap the PressReader application.

Please note that due to the size of the publications stored in the My Library section of PressReader for iPad/iPhone, the Backup Content switch is set to Off by default to avoid the length of time it takes to back up your device through iTunes.

Answer: To immediately cancel your PressDisplay.com/PressReader subscription, log in to www.pressdisplay.com using your existing account credentials and navigate to My Services > My Accounts > My Subscription. I am using your iPad app and I am extremely disappointed with the performance of this product. It is unstable, freezes for no reason and is very frustrating to use. Because it is so unreliable, I cannot enjoy reading my newspaper. I have even had the app close on its own while attempting to turn a page. Until these problems are addressed, I would discourage anyone from using this app.

      November 12th, 2010 at 18:33 | #2

      Hi Marilyn,

Thanks for your comment. Your sentiment is one we’ve heard frequently over the last several weeks. Plain and simple, PressReader V2.0 missed the mark – at least from a stability point of view. For that, the whole PressReader team apologizes.

I am however really excited to tell you that PressReader V2.1 was submitted to Apple this past Wednesday (November 10th). I can assure you that this version will be much, much more stable and will come with some great new features and functionality.

Hope you’re willing to give it a try when it’s available and thank you for your patience in the meantime.

      Michael

    Well done!

Very impressive reader. I like reading some of the financial papers as well. Where’s the Wallstreet Journal? Thanks.

  4. December 30th, 2010 at 00:49 | #6

Thanks Jeffrey! I’m glad you are enjoying PressReader. We did have WSJE and WSJA for a while, but the publisher decided to do their own app. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t want to have their cake and eat it too with both apps (we do pay them for every copy read by subscribers). Perhaps they don’t need the money :)

Anyway, we’ll keep trying and if you feel so inclined, write them and ask them to get back on PressReader – every little bit helps! :)

    Cheers

    Hi,

I just got the pressreader app and was thinking about getting the “personal unlimited” subscription. Unfortunately it doesnt state anywhere how long I have to take the subscription for. Can I just cancel it any time or do I have to pay for a year or something like that?

Hi Daniel. Personal Unlimited subscriptions are paid on a month-by-month basis and can be canceled at any time. To cancel, just send an email to pressdisplay@newspaperdirect.com.
      Hope this helps!

Hi, I love Press Reader as it is one of the only ways to get Canadian newspapers on an android platform – and the selection of newspapers is truly amazing!

I’m considering buying a Xoom Tablet and was wondering if Press Reader is available in a Honeycomb specialized format or if there are plans to make a specialized app for the Honeycomb platform.

Thanks, and keep up the great work!

    • Michael Oksinski

      Hi Robb,

Thanks for the support! :) PressReader currently works on the Honeycomb platform but it will be even better with the next release (i.e. the zoom functionality will be improved). I actually managed to test it myself on the Xoom yesterday and I thought it looked pretty darn good :) .

Thanks and have fun with your new Xoom!

Hi Chalo. Thanks for your PressReader support and publication suggestions. I’ll forward your request off to our publishing team but in the meantime, I’d suggest writing these publishers directly encouraging them to make their newspapers available on PressReader and PressDisplay.com. Readers can have a big influence on the choices publishers make :) .

    June 13th, 2011 at 09:27 | #25

I have a couple of suggestions for improvements to the Press Reader software on Android:

    1) Have an option in settings to turn off the blue highlighting of SmartNavigation elements as I rarely use this and it detracts from the view, and in some cases makes it hard to read the text around it.
    2) Have an option in settings to choose the default view when entering the Store. I don’t want to be presented with a list of countries each time I go to the store, I would prefer to go straight to the Favourites view.

Other than those niggles, great app!!!

    Hi Michael

Things are going from bad to worse I am afraid. Did the change on the websiteall OK, now the app is not working on the pad.It is not recognising my account, failing to load up countries or accept the papers I selected on the website for download.

Tried to authorise, didn’t recognise the account, obviously there is one otherwise I couldn’t access the website, all very confusing.

I did update the app, could this be an issue causing this. if so should I uninstall the update?

    Cheers

      Hi Nigel,

Sorry to hear you’re experiencing more difficulties. I would suggest uninstalling PressReader completely than reinstalling it from the iTunes App Store. Once you do, try to authorize it again with your user credentials. This should clear away any lingering issues. If it doesn’t, I’ll put you in touch with our support team immediately.

      Let me know.
      Cheers,

    Hi Michael,

I am sorry to be a nagging bug; but I was just wondering when we can see the Pressreader app on Playbook? ‘The next couple of days’ have come and gone, but I still do not find the ways to download the Pressreader app from the blackberry app world. I hope the delay is from the RIM end, and not from your end. That would be at least be some what reassuring. We are now used to RIM’s tardy ways with PB.

      July 22nd, 2011 at 15:39 | #45

Hi again Dheerendra. I do indeed have an update for you.

PressReader was uploaded to BlackBerry App World this past Wednesday. We’ve been advised by the nice folks at RIM that it’ll take approximately 1 week for the app to be approved so it’s looking like it’ll be available by next Wednesday plus or minus a couple of days. I hope this helps.

      Cheers,
      Michael

    Hi,
I have downloaded the pressreader app for iPad and I am loving it. It is such a great way to access newspapers from the UK. I live in hong kong and miss being able to read a newspaper in the original format.

I have 2 free issues left and looked at the subscription options today. Can you confirm that if I choose the pay as you go, a copy of the guardian or observer will cost me 79p and will include all the supplements or will I be charged 79p for the paper and 79p for each supplement?

    Thanks,
    Paul

Hi Paul – thanks for your question.
Under the Pay As You Go subscription plan, once you purchase a copy of either the Guardian or Observer, any supplements available on the same day are free to download as well.
Hope that helps and glad you’re enjoying the app!

    Hi!

im interested in getting your app for iPhone! but i dont quite understand your subscription plans… how do they work? Do i get to download as many issues i want per month if i get the “personal” plan?

      July 28th, 2011 at 17:12 | #49

Hi Miggy – thanks for your question.
With the personal subscription plan, you’re paying for unlimited selection rather than unlimited downloads. What this means is that you can choose to download any single publication available through http://www.pressdisplay.com and PressReader (on your iOS, Android, Win 7 Slate or BlackBerry device) and read it at anytime provided you stay within the terms of our Fair Use Policy. You can read up on the policy here: http://www.pressdisplay.com/pressdisplay/helpandsupport.aspx?subpage=TermsOfUse#Fair%20Use%20Policy. In short, it states that you can download approximately 100 issues per month or 3-4 daily.
      Hope this helps!

This is a known issue in version 2.4. To get around it, please tap on the “list view” icon located at the bottom of your My Library screen and proceed to delete any downloaded publications.
Sorry for the inconvenience – the ability to delete downloaded publications in “bookshelf” view will be fixed in our next release.

    Hi Michael,

Yes, I already downloaded it from my Appworld yesterday. Thanks a lot.
This morning I started reading newspapers on my playbook. What a pleasant experience it was. Now I can park my 9.7″ iPad2 for reading at home; while I can carry my 7″ Playbook with me. This was one application I was missing on my playbook since the day it was launched. For news buffs like me, there is no greater application than Press Reader. If only other newspapers like Telegraph UK, Times UK, and Outlook magazine India are accessible from PressReader, it would be much better. But again it is upto those newspaper organizations to make a choice. Thanks for bearing with my importunate requests in last few weeks. By the way, I must tell that I had a Samsung Galaxy 7 ” tablet as well earlier. That was where I first downloaded Press Reader application. The current application on Blackberry Playbook is a great improvement, and I found navigating the pages very smooth. Congrats to your entire team.

Hi David. Thanks for your comment.
We’re constantly adding new publications to PressDisplay.com and PressReader. May I ask which newspapers you’re referring to? Although there is no specific spot to request new publications, I would be more than happy to pass along a note to our publishing department. Also, it never hurts to write the publisher directly asking whether they have a desire to be added to the list of publications available through our products and services. Your voice as a reader can go a long way! :) .

Hello! I use PressReader for the BB Playbook. I have two questions:
    1) How can I delete newspapers? There is no “delete” feature anywhere in PressReader and in the “Settings” there is nothing there related to deleting files either manually or automatically. So after using the app for a month and a half, my Playbook is running out of memory, packed with old newspapers I can’t get rid of!
    2) Some newspapers are available on the PressDisplay.com website, and not on the “Store” tab of the Playbook PressDisplay app. Why this difference?
    Cheers – Francois

    • Michael Oksinski
      September 14th, 2011 at 10:33 | #67

Hi François – thanks for your questions.

To delete newspapers on your PlayBook, simply tap and hold down the title you wish to delete until you receive the deletion prompt. Then simply follow the ensuing instructions.

As far as your second question goes, the decision to make publications available on specific devices and platforms is completely up to publishers. Some choose to make their newspapers available on PressDisplay.com AND every PressReader platform (iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Win 7) while others unfortunately don’t. I’d encourage you to pass a note along to the publisher asking them to reconsider :) .

      Hope that helps!

I am getting great use out of Press Reader and love how it presents the newspaper. I am using the BB Playbook. There is one niggle however. When I click on the blued out headline to open the text the first screen I get whether portrait or landscape has many columns , and needs scolling, therefore not at all easy to use. If I turn the PB through 90 degrees in the new orientation it is fine and page turning works fine.

Am I doing anything wrong or is this something you should be looking at to fix ?

Hi Jacques. Thanks for your comment on the PressDisplay Blog.
Regarding iOS 5 Newsstand, there is no real impact to our service. PressReader will eventually be available through it but users will continue subscribing through PressDisplay.com. Basically, other than where you’ll access it on your iOS device, nothing else will change.

    Hello,
On the 12th October, I installed the iOS 5 and since then I have been unable to use the menu which authorizes the Press Display account. So far good update, can’t wait to see the new reader though :)

Will the app be compatible in a short term with the new kiosk app that came with ios5. I find myself enjoying the way I see my magazine and newspaper through this app. Any plan to let our subscription be available trough kiosk – since it’s only build a bridge to an application like pressreader.

    Hi,
How do I download “The Age” if I am unable to view it due to it being blocked for viewing in Australia?
Does this mean “The Age” is no longer available for viewing via PressReader in Aus?

      November 9th, 2011 at 16:02 | #90

Hi Greg. Thanks for your question. Unfortunately, The Age is no longer available on PressReader for those living in Australia. This is a regional restriction however I do want to emphasize that this was a decision made by Fairfax and not NewspaperDirect. As a company, we want as many publications available to readers regardless of where they live in the world so we really do feel bad for Australian readers in this particular instance. I would encourage you to contact Fairfax directly and express your desire to read The Age via PressReader. If enough people voice their opinion, we’re hopeful they’ll have a change of heart.

I have re-installed PressReader at least 4 times, re-authorized it more than a dozen times, but still have the same problem after 5-6 months: The last newspaper in my library disappears seemingly randomly after just 2 weeks, regardless of how I have the program configured to keep the downloaded papers in the library (1 month, 3 months, never).

Needless to say this is extremely annoying, and I am actively searching for an alternative app for my news that doesn’t randomly cleaning my house for me.

    Regards,
    mondo

    • Michael Oksinski
      November 18th, 2011 at 10:21 | #94

Hi mondovolleyball. I apologize however there is an explanation for your newspapers disappearing seemingly randomly. Despite having the ability to remove downloaded publications after a specific period of time (never, after 3, 7, 14 and 30 days), offline storage terms are set by the publisher and vary by publication. Many publications have no storage restrictions at all. In this case, the specific setting you select will work without any issues.

For the publications that do have restrictions, any downloads will automatically delete after x number of days. Again I’d just like to emphasize that this is a decision the publisher makes and not us.

The offline storage restriction is mentioned when signing up to PressDisplay.com: https://www.pressdisplay.com/pressdisplay/accountingregistration.aspx

Can you tell me which publications are disappearing on you? Once you do, I’ll be able to tell you how long you can store them for.

I do apologize once again however I hope the explanation I provided helps clarify the issue.

      Cheers,
      Michael

Are supplements counted as one newspaper. Also where can I find If i have gone over my daily allowance/monthly allowance. I am on the personal subscription plan. Thanks.

    • Michael Oksinski
      December 7th, 2011 at 09:23 | #105

Hi Stephen. Supplements are not counted. Once a main publication is downloaded, its supplements can be downloaded without being adding to your daily/monthly allowance. The allowance is actually just based off our fair usage policy. For the personal subscription plan, this amounts to 100 publications per month or approximately 3-4 publications per day. You can read about it on at http://www.pressdisplay.com/pressdisplay/helpandsupport.aspx?subpage=TermsOfUse#Fair%20Use%20Policy.

My question relates to casual subscription costs. Where it is 0.99 cents per download hows does that apply…say…to the UK daily telegraph? This is in four or five parts, Main, Sport, Business etc etc each of which are separate download…is the whole paper included for 99 cents or do I end up paying 4 x 0.99 for each part….that makes it an expense newspaper.

    • Michael Oksinski
      December 7th, 2011 at 09:24 | #107

      Hi Robin,
Thanks for your question. Once the main publication is downloaded, you are free to download any number (or all) of the supplements free of charge. If you purchased the Daily Telegraph for .99 cents, you have the ability to download its supplements at no extra cost.
      Hope that helps!

Hi Claude – thanks for your questions.
To delete publications downloaded on your Playbook, simply touch and hold the publication you’d like to delete. You’ll then be prompted with several options.
There is no specific new publications area on PressDisplay.com or PressReader but we try and post the new titles we’ve add to our service each month on the PressDisplay Blog. Here’s an example from the month of October: http://blog.pressdisplay.com/2011/11/22/new-to-newspaperdirect-october-2011/. If you register to the blog, you’ll be notified each time there’s a new post.
      Hope that helps!

    Hi
Love the Pressreader on the ipad and have been very happy with it up to a few weeks ago.I have it set to never delete any issues I download but in the last couple of weeks my downloaded issues of the Irish Independent have just disappeared.

Very frustrating. Any reason for this ?

      Hi Ger,
Thanks for you question and thanks for the support.

Offline storage terms are set by individual publishers and vary from publication to publication as outlined on the PressDisplay.com registration page: https://www.pressdisplay.com/pressdisplay/accountingregistration.aspx.

Despite having PressReader set to never delete downloaded issues, the specific offline storage term for any given publication will override your settings and automatically delete issues after x amount of days. If there is no storage term in place, you would be able to keep the issues you downloaded indefinitely.

I’ll check to see if the Irish Independent recently changed their policy and get back to you.

      Hope this helps for now!
      Cheers,
      Michael

I would like to be able to view newspapers on my nook, but the e-reader export looks terrible. And I don’t always have access to a computer to download the e-reader version. I want to be able to just have the PressReader app from the Android market on my Nook. Is this possible? I don’t want to root my phone.
    Thanks.

      Hi Joe,
We’re currently in the process of uploading a version of PressReader to the Nook Developer’s site. Once it’s approved, you’ll be able to download PressReader directly to your Nook device.
Please check back soon. I hope this helps!

I subscribe online to the e-edition of a local newspaper that is available through newspaperdirect.com (the Rappahannock News in Virginia, US). When I try to read the paper on my Pressreader app on my iPad it asks me to buy a copy but I have a subscription to the paper. Are these two applications/websites different?

      Hi Flergen,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Have you tried authorizing PressReader with your Rappahannock News online e-edition credentials?
To do so, simply open PressReader, tap Settings and enter your existing account credentials. Then, just tap the Authorize button.
Let me know if this works :) .
      Cheers,

Once you’re there, click on My Services, My Account, and finally on Credit Card (located in the left hand pane). You will be able to update your card there. I hope that helps! :)

    Hi Michael.

Is there a reason it costs more for PressReader subscription through iTunes then it does by subscribing online? I’m in Canada, so I know there’s a slight difference for the exchange rate, but not this much. Your subscription is usually $29.95US, but iTunes wants to charge me $33.99CAD. That’s a big difference when the exchange rate is only about $1.02CAD to $1 US.

      January 9th, 2012 at 17:04 | #123

      Hi Lonnie…thanks for your question.
It actually has nothing to do with exchange rate. The difference in price is what Apple is tacking on to our USD $29.95 subscription rate. It really boils down to choice – some users may prefer subscribing directly through iTunes rather than http://www.pressdisplay.com. If they do however, they’ll be dinged a few extra dollars by Apple, not NewspaperDirect. I would suggest subscribing online at https://www.pressdisplay.com/pressdisplay/accountingregistration.aspx for the 29.95 rate.
      Hope that helps!
      Cheers,
      Michael

    @Michael Oksinski

Thanks for the quick reply. :)

The only other issue I have is canceling a individual subscription. I have one to the Winipeg Sun and want cancel the auto renewal so can switch t the 29.95 deal. What’s the best way to approach that?

  69. Reg
    January 24th, 2012 at 18:42 | #125

    Why two prices?
Your site states $29.95 a sub and the istore asking $35?
Even current exchange rate thats $31 in my currency…
    Not good

      January 25th, 2012 at 09:28 | #126

      Hi Reg.
Thanks for your comment. I am sorry for the confusion. We just recently offered PressReader subscriptions directly through iTunes but had to do it under the Apple “rules” which require us to pay Apple 30% on every sale through their store.

There is no overhead like that when purchasing PressReader through us directly. So that’s the difference. If you purchase PressReader through iTunes, it’s more expensive and it only allows you to use PressReader on iOS devices.

If your purchase PressReader at $29.95/month USD from http://www.pressdisplay.com, you can use it on up to 6 devices including iOS, Android, Playbook, eReaders and computers. So you see, it’s a much better deal to purchase directly from us. Think of it as buying wholesale :)

Hope this helps clarify it for you.

      Cheers,
      Gayle

I really love the PressReader app for the iPad.

I recently received the new iPad, and I’m happy to report that your app works even more smoothly on it. However, it appears as though the text is not taking advantage of the retina display in the “Page View”. I have a strong preference for the “Page View,” since it best replicates the experience of reading the paper.

Can you say when retina-quality text will be available in the “page view”?

Thanks again for offering a great product.

It’s looking really slick :) . I do know that the NYT will not be available as part of PressReader (at least for the time being). Other than this I love the app!

    Hi.

I’m a happy long-term subscriber. However, the latest update won’t open on my iPad 2; I see the loading screen for a second, then it crashes back to the springboard.

I’ve tried restarting the iPad, deleting the app both on the device and through iTunes then restoring it both from iTunes and the App Store.

I’m using a Mac, but can’t revert to the previous version through Time Machine as iTunes stores apps on a separate hard drive.

    Is this a known issue?

    Thanks,

Thanks for your question on the PressDisplay. To delete individual issues you no longer need, you simply need to tap and hold (i.e. long press) the publication in question. Once you’ve held it down for several seconds, you will be prompted to delete the title.

Thank you for letting me know the option to have publications auto-deleted is not working. I’ll forward this to our support team for further investigation.

Generally very happy with Pressreader for the playbook. After using the pay as you go service for several months I cancelled the delivery of both my local paper and the Globe and Mail and subscribed to your monthly service. That has been working great for about 3 months.
