PressReader version 3.1.1 for iPad released

May 31st, 2012 No comments

I’m pleased to let our iPad users know that we’ve listened to your comments, feedback and suggestions submitted on PressReader 3.1 and have answered the call with a brand new release of the application.

PressReader version 3.1.1 for iPad/iPhone is now available for download from the iTunes App Store and brings with it significant improvements in performance. To start, the addition of a brand new page turning algorithm will provide a much more enjoyable and fluid reading experience by allowing users to swipe to the next page of the publicatoin they’re reading prior to the previous page completing its rendering process.

While the improvement can be experienced on all iPad models, it is most noticeable on the iPad 3.  Users will now be able to enjoy the clarity of retina display with the performance they have come to expect from PressReader.

In addition to the new page turning algorithm, PressReader 3.1.1 has made improvements to its SmartFlow horizontal reading stream and overall stability.

We would love to hear what you think of the latest version. Please comment below or drop us a line at iphonesupport@newspaperdirect.com.

The new iPad is a dream come true for people who enjoy the wealth of newspapers and magazines that PressReader has to offer. The breathtaking resolution of thMe new iPad Retina Display means that we can render razor-sharp text, at any zoom level,” said Alex Kroogman, CEO of NewspaperDirect. “Our new SmartFlow technology really shines at high resolution, and the integration with the best clipping applications like Evernote raises the bar for every other news app out there.

New features added in PressReader 3.1 include:

  • Optimization for the new “Retina Display” resolution of the next-generation iPad. Pages, text views and images are rendered at 264 pixels per inch, resulting in amazing clarity, even when zoomed in.

NewspaperDirect’s PressReader > A New Way to Read the Paper

Words by Matthew Schildroth, News Editor, MacDirectory

Arthur Baer once said that “a newspaper is a circulating library with high blood pressure.” This sentiment couldn’t be more true, especially considering how much of an information-dependent age we live in. It is really amazing how fast-paced the news industry is. When you combine this with the fact that people are more mobile now than ever, it is really no surprise that circulation of printed newspapers has been declining for the past couple of years. The old stereotype of dad reading the paper at the breakfast table with a cup of coffee while mom makes toast and the kids eat their cereal has changed, and now dad is reading the newspaper in a completely different way – in a digital format.

The sad thing about the decline of newspapers (aside from the loss of a very effective fly slaying weapon) is that much of the print publication’s quality is lost. Reading the newspaper has become more of a website experience and less of an organized publication. For those who want a combination of quality publications and the mobility that digital editions have to offer, there is no better source than NewspaperDirect’s PressReader, which has very effectively preserved the newspaper experience while still delivering the rich content we’ve come to expect.

Matthew Schildroth, News Editor, MacDirectory

PressReader is available for a variety of platforms including Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Mac, and PC, but out of all the previously mentioned operating systems, PressReader really comes alive when it is on iOS, specifically on the iPad’s bigger screen and when it can be browsed with the touch screen interface. As I browsed through several different publications including The Washington Post, International Herald Tribune, and USA Today, I was amazed with how crisp everything looked. In addition to the quality of the newspapers themselves, I was pleasantly surprised by the interface of the app itself. Unlike many newspaper apps on the iTunes App Store, PressReader allows you to read all your newspapers within one single streamlined app, and you can read the newspapers from the front page to the back exactly as it is printed instead of only getting select stories. Publications can be read in both portrait and landscape view, and you can pan, zoom, and rotate pages using native gestures that Apple users are familiar with. When on the “home screen” of the app, it is like your own personal newsstand where you can download the current editions of the newspapers that you subscribe to. Tap the store icon, and you will be blown away by the number of publications available – over 1,700 publications in 92 countries and 48 languages.

Publications can be downloaded for offline viewing, and you can also search for specific stories across the entire NewspaperDirect library, so finding something to read is never difficult. Even if all you have is an iPhone, the mobile version is extremely responsive. When I used it on my iPod touch, I was impressed with how much it maintained the usefulness that the iPad version has, as well as how easy it was to navigate and read newspapers despite the smaller screen. The PressReader app offers more than just traditional reading as well. If you tap on the header of a story, the story will open in a text-only format that also gives you the option of listening to the story using text-to-speech (and quality text-to-speech at that), which is especially useful if you are easily fatigued by reading on a smaller screen. If you find a story that you find particularly interesting, you can also email a link to the story, share it on Twitter or Facebook, or print a graphics or text-only copy of it using AirPrint.

Regardless of whether you are using a large screen or a small screen, you can’t beat the content that PressReader has to offer, especially at a price as low as it is. Pricing varies depending upon how much access you want or need, but you can choose to pay as you go for $0.99 per issue, or a personal subscription for $29.95 that will allow you to view all newspapers in the library (corporate and professional pricing are also available).

Even though it may be true that a newspaper is a circulating library with high blood pressure, PressReader is one app that makes that blood pressure just a little bit easier to control, at least for the reader. With the wide availability of PressReader’s content, there really is no reason to not at least try it out – you never know, you might be pleasantly surprised how interesting the news can be.

NewspaperDirect Offers a Strategy to Publishers Wrestling with Apple Tax

February 16th, 2011 15 comments

Only a year ago, Apple’s iPad was touted as a publisher’s dream: a portable device that delivered an intimate and immersive reading experience.  Today, Apple formally announced a 30 percent tax on all content sales via iTunes, requiring all publishers to provide in-app subscription plans that are the same (or better) than their subscription plans outside of the app.  On those subscription plans, Apple will take 30% off the top!

Right up front, let me assure everyone that NewspaperDirect is totally against this money grab from Apple and believes that publishers and subscribers should take the same position.  Here’s why:

1.  It is unjustifiable for a hardware device manufacturer to charge 30% on a transaction that costs them less than 5 percent to perform.

2.  It is inexcusable to force publishers to comply with a manufacturer’s tiered subscription levels under that manufacturer’s terms and conditions, not just on its own iOS devices, but on whatever platform the publisher supports under their subscription plan (e.g. Android or BlackBerry or even PCs).

3.  Apple’s personal data policy is completely self-serving, helping neither publishers nor their subscribers.

Offering opt-in choices for subscribers to share their personal data with publishers is fine for single copy sales, but when a user specifically subscribes to a publisher’s content, the publisher should have access to the personal data of “their” subscribers.  These are not Apple subscribers; these are the publisher’s subscribers.

In a world where personalization is becoming more and more important, publishers must be able to tailor content to the preferences of their subscribers. Under Apple’s policy, this will not be possible.

And what is even worse is that publishers will not be able to count these subscribers in their audited circulation.  Ridiculous!

“I’m very dismayed that Apple would make such an unpopular move at this time, given the abundance of high-quality alternate devices entering the market,” said Nikolay Malyarov, NewspaperDirect’s VP of publishing and legal affairs. “We’ve already seen how Android-based phones negatively impacted the iPhone market share; I expect nothing less from the open, full-featured Honeycomb-based tablets, BlackBerry and Win 7 devices coming soon.  People want a wide variety of choice when it comes to devices, and this move will likely compel content owners and publishers to rethink their tablet strategy.”

Publishers must act now to avoid lock-out from their subscribers

NewspaperDirect recommends that publishers immediately implement a viable cross-platform strategy and factor Apple’s 30 percent cut into content sold via the App Store:

1.  Cease all free promotions of the iPad in newspapers and on publishers’ websites. Instead, accord more attention to non-iOS devices in their publications. If Apple is choosing to exert control over their channels, publishers should focus on channels that are not subject to the whims of greedy hardware vendors.

2.  Develop free news apps for the Apple iOS, and use them to drive traffic to publishers’ websites where more reasonable options are available to subscribers on other platforms.

3.  Pursue a multi-platform approach that uses cross-platform technologies and create two subscription models on your website:

Subscription plan 1:  Offer content across all supported platforms except iOS devices at your normal subscription rate.

Subscription plan 2: Offer content across all supported platforms including iOS devices for 30% more than Subscription plan 1.

Marketing will be key in communicating to subscribers the added value they will receive through a subscription with publishers rather than through Apple — value such as subscription portability across devices and platforms, digital value packages, loyalty programs, etc.

Publishers who already have iOS apps in the App Store or have apps in development, will  need to update their subscription plans/tiers to comply with Apple’s new policies.  NewspaperDirect will take care of all the UI development to ensure your apps are fully compliant.

“Apple’s subscription model and user data policy for publishers is very short-sighted,” said Alex Kroogman, CEO of NewspaperDirect.  “With powerful, new web apps gaining popularity, and technologies like HTML5 which provide native-like functionality on tablets, publishers can now give their subscribers an excellent news app, directly in the web browser, and completely bypass Apple’s App Store.”

Apple has gone too far.  It’s time for publishers and subscribers around the world to stand up and fight this extortion.  Do your part – speak out now!
